Major ASM Events in 2014

ASM in 2014

By Mike Blohm, ASM Vice President

I would like to thank the members of ASM for the support they gave to our major club projects during 2014.  These included conducting a great model show at the 2014 Albuquerque Comic Expo in June (over 140 models), and sponsoring and judging the 2014 New Mexico State Fair Model Contest in September that included a great ASM display-only "70th Anniversary of D-Day" and "100th Anniversary of World War I" model exhibit (32 models).  The biggest ASM undertaking of 2014 was the very successful "Chile Con III" IPMS/USA Region 10 Convention and Model Contest in July, with around 83 entrants and 600 models.  At the Chile Con awards banquet, ASM was awarded both the Region 10 Chapter of the Year Award for 2013 and the Region 10 Website of the Year Award for 2013.  ASM conducted a Group Field Trip to the Pima Air Museum in Tucson, Arizona in April that was well-attended.  ASM also supported the Cavalcade of Wings Model Display by setting-up and hosting a model display during the City of Albuquerque's Durand Open Spaces celebration in May.  And lastly, we had a great turnout and good audience participation for the World War II veterans' presentation and the accompanying "Mustangs and Corsairs" contest (24 models) at the December meeting.  So all in all, I think ASM had a pretty good 2014.  Thanks again for supporting the club, and let's all strive to continue to have fun building models, and promoting the hobby in 2015.

ASM Wins Accolades!

by Joe Walters

During the Chile Con 3 Region 10 Modeling Contest and Convention, Region 10 Coordinator Mike Mackowski stepped up at the end of the post-banquet awards ceremony and awarded the three main annual Regional awards for 2013 - 2014.

Newsletter of the Year went to The Corsair, newsletter of IPMS Craig Hewitt in Phoenix, Mike Pabis, editor.

Webmaster of the Year naturally went once again to the Ultimate Webmaster of the Universe, our own Mike Blohm. A well-deserved congratulations to Mike!

And the coveted Chapter of the Year plaque was awarded to Albuquerque Scale Modelers, implying that there must be something of worth to this little club. Congratulations to all in ASM this past year!

ASM Model Contest at the New Mexico State Fair

By Mike Blohm

This year's New Mexico State Fair model contest was very successful, with a very high number of entries.  There were a total of 57 model entries made by 32 entrants, and the display cases were packed to overflowing.  Specific contest results and pictures of all the models (about 270 total) are available on the ASM 2014 New Mexico State Fair webpage.  Overall, 59% of the entrants were non-ASM members, and they had 40% of the model entries.

There were 6 Youth entrants with 7 total models across 7 classes (out of 18).  The Best of Show - Youth award was won by Will Kettelborough for his Nina sailing ship.  There was one Senior Youth entrant with one model.  The Best of Show - Senior Youth award was a nicely done 1/48 scale F-14 Tomcat by Braydon Aldridge.

The Adult section had the most entrants - 14 with 20 models across 10 of the 18 classes.  Byron Gore took the Best of Show - Adult award with a superb USS Olympia protected cruiser.  The most unusual model in the 2014 contest was an outstanding "RX-0 Unicorn Gundam" built by Brandon Brown that took a First Place ribbon in the Miscellaneous class.  It was built from paper card stock and about six feet tall.  Another huge superb model was a six foot long USS Saint Paul cruiser scratch-built by Don Goodrich.  Those two models in the middle of our display cases really attracted a lot of attention.

The Professional section had 11 entrants (all ASM members) with 29 total models across 13 of the 18 classes.  Competition was pretty fierce with most of the classes having multiple entries.  The Aircraft, Non-Jet - Small scale (1/72 scale & smaller) class had 7 entries - more than you normally see at an ASM contest.  Victor Maestas won the Best of Show - Professional award with his excellent 1/48th scale Fokker Dr.1 Triplane in the markings of Manfred Von Richthofen.

ASM also put on the "70th Anniversary of D-Day" and "100th Anniversary of World War I" non-competition display that included 32 total models of aircraft, figures, armor, and ships, with maps and information on those events.  The display included two 1/144 scale models, fifteen 1/72 scale models, six 1/48 scale models, two 1/32 scale models, and six 1/35 scale models - a great representation of what can be built.

Thanks to all the ASM members who entered the contest.  A big thanks to all who helped with the model entries and model judging, including Josh Pals, Larry Glenn, Victor Maestas, Frank Randall, Jack Garriss, Michel Wingard, and Mike Blohm.  And finally, thanks to the model contributors for the D-Day and World War I display that included Larry Glenn, Jack Garriss, Frank Randall, Ken Liotta, Mike Blohm, Victor Maestas, Tony Humphries, and John Tate.  Please start brainstorming a theme for the 2015 ASM display-only presentation.

Chile Con 3

By Joe Walters

Chile Con 3, the 2014 Region 10 Contest and Convention, was held the weekend of July 11 and 12, and was considered quite a success by virtually everyone who attended.  Chile Con 3 easily surpassed the first two Chile Cons in numbers all around, as 83 modelers entered somewhere between 550 and 600 models, depending on who you ask. Official numbers to come!

We had so many models entered that we had to ask the hotel staff for more tables-only to find out there weren't any! We were already using every table they had! Fortunately, it worked out; a few more entries and we might have had some real estate limitations, something to keep in mind should we ever lose our minds far enough to do another one of these things.

For the first time in my recollection, a Region Coordinator actually attended one of our events! Mike Mackowski arrived with models to enter, and made himself a presence throughout the show, even conducting a Region 10 Meeting. He also took home a First Place in Realspace for his Curiosity Mars Rover. And of course, Mike also handed out some goodies as detailed in the lead article.

The local military vehicle preservation club again was set to do a major display for us, something that does wonders in bringing in walk-in traffic, but only two vehicles actually appeared. We blocked off half the parking area for basically a Hummer and a Jeep… something else to keep in mind for next time.

The dealer room was jammed with vendors of various wares, and it was a rare modeler who was able to venture in there and make it out again without purchasing something!

As always, there were a few glitches in the slide show at the awards presentation, something that seemed to generate great amusement in the audience but was a bit frustrating to we who did not have an opportunity to do a 'proofread' run-through beforehand, as the post-banquet audience was anxiously awaiting us as we finished building the thing. Ken Liotta and I are working on correcting it-and Ken has to run down a couple of winners that might shouldn't have been entered due to having been previous winners-and when we have it all right and proper, the full results will be posted on the ASM Website, and a pdf file of the full slideshow will be downloadable for those interested. Watch this space for details.

ASM Member Gil De La Plain did a great job of photographing each of the model entries just before judging commenced, and you can view all of these excellent photos online now (http://tinyurl.com/chile3pix). These photos will remain available for the foreseeable (Chile Con 2 pics are still in that gallery-explore and you'll find them!).

ASM Member Mike Foust took a large number of photos after the banquet of the awards ceremony, and you can also view them online now (http://tinyurl.com/chili3awards). These photos will remain available at least through August, after which I'll take them down.

If you didn't manage to attend, you really missed out. This was an excellent show!

Thanks to all who helped make Chile Con 3 a success, and my special thanks to Ken's better half Rita and to the photographers who kept all the data flowing rapidly to me during the judging!

Albuquerque Comic Expo 2014

By Joe Walters

ASM100.jpg (82854 bytes) IPMSUSA%20Logo%20LD.jpg (17589 bytes)

Albuquerque Comic Expo (ACE) was held the weekend of June 27-29 at the Albuquerque Convention Center, and certainly lived up to its reputation as the premier comics / science fiction / fantasy show of this area.

Literally thousands of people attended, many in costumes. Albuquerque Scale Modelers had a presence there as well, as we took up six tables in the lobby area. This is a great location - were right next to the main entrance, and straight across from the escalator one descends if arriving from the parking garage. That means that everyone who attends the show gets a good look at us whether they want to or not! And many, many attendees did indeed want to!

We had around 140 sci-fi and fantasy based models on display, along with our ubiquitous "What is Scale Modeling?" display, and a huge banner identifying us to the multitudes (you may have seen this banner at Chile Con, where it sat behind the ops are in the model room).

We had a good turnout of ASM members to man our station and answer questions from the public, of which there were many. We ran our first ACE Make & Take at this show, and were amazed at the interest-we ran out of models the first afternoon, and had to shut it down for the rest of the show!

Many people asked us where one could buy models, and where and when we meet, and many of our little club flyers were handed out. We also distributed quite a few of the little quadfolds we had made for Chile Con, so we may have inspired a few folks to attend that show as well.

There was a vast dealer room, offering not only comic-related wares but also books, video games, legos, posters, toys, and even original artwork from celebrity artists with their own booths. There were displays of famous autombiles, including the 1960s Batmobile, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Volkswagen, and even a Star Wars landspeeder.

Many celebrity guests spoke and were available for autographs and such; I was glad to have a chance to see Joel Hodgson, creator of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 series, speak on that show and future projects.

We were able to corral quite a few costumed attendees to act as "celebrity judges," to select their favorite model and pose for a photograph.

We even had a visitation from some actual celebrities. Two of the stars of the television series Being Human stopped by and really geeked out on the models! Sam Huntington liked a Millennium Falcon, while Sam Witwer preferred a TIE Fighter display.

ACE is a great opportunity for exposure for our little club, and is a great success in the area of generating interest on the part of the public.

ASM Make 'N Take at ACE 2014

We ran our first ACE Make 'N Take at this show, and were amazed at the interest by both kids and some slightly-older folks.  The parents also got involved with their kid's building projects. We went through 32 models very quickly on the first day of ACE.  We will plan to have twice as many kits at the next event.   Pictures are posted below.  Note that "Deadpool" in the bottom right picture below did his own Make 'N Take, borrowing some super glue to fix one of his weapons!

ASM Support to Cavalcade of Wings Model Display

By Mike Blohm

ASM members Mark Vaughn and Mike Blohm set up and manned the Cavalcade of Wings' model display at the Durand Open Spaces celebration on May 10th, 2014.  The event was called "Soaring the South Valley: A Celebration of Birds and Planes" and was a rededication of the 1999 sale of land that was formerly the home of Westernair of Albuquerque to preserve it as "open space."  Dick Durand Jr. formed Westernair Flying Service in 1955 and in 1959 it became Westernair of Albuquerque.  The business included a 1,850 foot long grass airstrip called the "Pea Patch" as part of its operations.  Now known as Westernair Inc, it has been in business for over 50 years and is run by his son Dickie Durand III.  The business rebuilt aircraft and restored classic airplanes, and in the process brought flight to the South Valley of Albuquerque.  The business eventually expanded to the West Mesa Airport, and power lines installed in the early 1980's made the airstrip no longer functional for landings.  After the airstrip was closed the property (10 acres) became agricultural land.  The airstrip's location and some of the hangar buildings/shops are still visible in the Open Space area.

The event included a display of gliders by the Albuquerque Soaring Association, a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) color guard for the opening ceremony, lots of model glider flying, the Cavalcade of Wings' (CoW) model display, a host of displays by nature-related organizations including some live predator birds (peregrine falcon, owl and kestrel), guided bird-sighting walks, and a fly-by near the end of the event.

The CoW model display consisted of two tables with about 28 models that had been borrowed from CoW displays at the Kirtland AFB control tower or from storage.  There were several models of aircraft that had been based at the Durand air field, including a Cessna that turned out to have the very serial number and CAP markings that had been painted on it by Westernair.  See the picture with the hangar behind it where the real aircraft had probably been painted.  Lots of people came by to ask about the models and the CoW display at the airport.  Handouts on both the CoW and ASM were passed out to the visitors.  Hopefully we will get some of those folks to come visit an ASM meeting.  The Durand Open Space is located at 4750 Isleta Blvd. SW.

ASM Group Field Trip - Pima Air Museum

ASM members participated in a group field trip on April 12-13, 2014 to the Pima Air Museum in Tucson, Arizona.  The group drove down early on Satuday morning and returned late Sunday afternoon.  A bonus was that the Davis-Monthan AFB Open House was being conducted that same weekend, and ASM members were able to view or participate in that event as well.  ASM family members also participated - we had eleven total people - and a good time was had by all.  Thanks to Brian Peck for organizing and leading the trip.  See the Guide Pictures below for aircarft that are on display at the museum.  Additional pictures from this April 2014 trip and also several other trip reports for the Pima Museum are on the Field Trips web page.
