2017 ASM Contest Schedule

Points Contests:

Maximum of three entries per modeler, excluding Works-in-Progress

Open to all entries, in-theme or not

Five entries allowed per modeler

Other:

Three Works-In-Progress entries allowed at each meeting (2 points per WIP entry)

State Fair contest entries earn 50 points per model / 25 pts for display—max of 3 models.

 

 

January 6: Special Contest - Real Space/Science/Sci-Fi/Fantasy (Non-Points).

         Annual "Moe Blalters" special contest in honor of our longtime ASM Just Staff and Sci-Fi & Fantasy enthusiasts, Joe Walters and Mike Blohm, contest open to any subject, any scale, within theme. Examples include a Mercury space capsule, dinosaur, X-Wing Fighter or fantasy figure. Be creative!

         Sponsored Contest: Frickin' Laser Beams (Patrick Dick). Any subject involving lasers!

 

February 3: ASM Swap Meet - No contest. Bring your surplus kits to sell or swap!

 

March 3: Points Contest #1. Open Contest. Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.

 

April 7: Points Contest #2. 100 years of US involvement in The Great War

         Open to any subject, any scale that was involved in WWI.

Clinic: Jerry Little: Paint chipping techniques

 

May 5: Points Contest #3. Star Wars, 40 year anniversary of the release of Episode IV, A New Hope

         Open to any subject, any scale that is from of the Star Wars universe.

 

June 2: Special Contest - Kill Markings (Non-Points)

         Open to any subject or any scale that has kill markings added by the crew to the standard camouflage.  Includes mission markings.

         Sponsored Contest: General Motors (Patrick Dick), ROE forthcoming.

 

June 16-17 Chile-Con IV

 

July 7: Points Contest #4. 1967.

 Open to any kit, any subject, any scale that represents the year 1967.  Can include MY '67 autos, aircraft that operated in 1967, subjects involved in conflicts that were disputed during the year (Arab/Israeli War, Vietnam War including Operation Bolo) etc.

 

August 4: Swap Meet - No Contest. Bring your surplus kits to sell or swap!

 

September 1: Points Contest #5. First or Last

         Any subject or any scale that represents the first or last of anything.  Includes prototypes, aircraft with retirement schemes, first flight, last flight, (1953 Corvette, SR-71 final record setting flight, etc.)

          Sponsored Contest: E Board, Knife Fight/Night Light

Any subject, scale or kit that includes a cutting device in the name (cutlass, rapier, sabre) or in the subject (Figure with a knife) –OR- any subject, scale or kit that operates primarily at night (night fighters, armored vehicles with IR spotlights, special ops, owls, etc.). Special award for subjects that combine both categories.

 

September 7-17, 2017: New Mexico State Fair. Display theme: Star Wars.

Star Wars themed entries for the display (non-contest) at the NM State Fair. See website for entry/judging dates.

 

October 6: Points Contest #6. Red Star

         Any subject, scale or kit that represents Communist influenced nations.  Includes Russia, Eastern Block countries, Cuba, etc.  Limited to the dates of the socialist state of USSR's existence: 1922 through 1991.

          * Sponsored Contest: "Orange" hosted by Gil De La Plain.  ROE:  Any subject, scale, or kit that is Orange in color.

 

November 4: ModelZona, Phoenix, AZ

 

November 10: Points Contest #7. Open Contest. Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.

(Meeting date shifted to allow ASM member attendance at ModelZona)

        * Sponsored Contest: "Heavies" hosted by Brian Peck. ROE: Any scale or kit of a subject that is considered a "heavy bomber" for its era.

 

December 1: ASM 2017 MODEL OF THE YEAR CONTEST.

Special Contest - Supersonic (Non-Points)

Any subject, scale or kit that represents something that travels faster than the speed of sound in Earth atmosphere (X-15; Speed Record cars i.e. Bloodhound, Thrust SSC; Felix Baumgartner figure etc.)

April 1st -  POINTS CONTEST #2. Theme:  "Rescue Me!Open to any subject, any scale or any kit that depicts First Responders.  This theme represents any subject that is the first in during a crisis.  This could be Special Ops figures, Ambulances, Aerial Fire Fighters or even Armor recovery vehicles.  This could include military or civilian subjects in all genres!

 

** May  13th - POINTS CONTEST #3.  Theme:  "Anniversaries" - Open to any subject, any scale or any kit that represents the anniversaries of 2016.  Subjects from the 100th, 75th, 50th, or 25th years.  That includes things like WWI (1916), WWII (1941), the Flower Power 60's (1966) or even the 90's (1991).

 

June 3rd - SPECIAL CONTEST - (Non-Points) - "Presidents" - Open to any subject or any scale named after a U.S. President.  This also includes any vehicles used specifically by a President.  This includes Air Force One, Marine Corp One, a Presidential Limo or even a Presidential Yacht.

 

Sponsored Contest:  "Northrup Grumman" - Patrick Dick.  Any Northrup Grumman subject or scale. 

 

July 8th - POINTS CONTEST #4.   OPEN CONTEST.  Open to any kit, any subject, any scale

**  Sponsored Contest:  "American Revolution / Bicentennial Subjects"  - Tony Humphries^^ Moved to October 7th 

August 5th - Swap Meet and Clinic Round Table - No Contest.  Surplus kit sale.  Basic modeling clinic set up to allow members to move- from table to table during the demonstrations.

 

September 2nd - POINTS CONTEST #5. Theme:  "Captured!" - Any subject or any scale that is finished in markings other than that of the country that designed the item.  These are machines that were captured or left behind and reused, tested or displayed.

Sponsored Contest:  ** Caricatures! - Gil De La Plain.   Anything that is a cartoon character or caricature that represents a person, animal or machine. Think anything by Dave Deal or Rat Finks, Weirdos, Silly Surfers, Egg Planes, Jetsons, Coyote/Road Runner or Flintstones type stuff.  No Superheros here...they're not weird enough! (No Marvel or DC comics super heroes allowed).

**  Sponsored Contest:  Star Trek 50th Anniversary  - Joe Walters and Mike and Matt Blohm.  Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the airing of the first episode of Star Trek!  Any subject, any scale that is Star Trek.

 Sponsored Contest:  100 Years of British Armor! - John Tate.  September 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the first use of tanks in war, by the British at the Battle of the Somme during WWI.  Open to any British tank, any scale or era, 1916 to Present.  

 

September 8-18 - 2016 New Mexico State Fair - Theme: "Desert Storm" - Any subject or scale that represents vehicle that participated in Operation Desert Storm.

 

October 7th - POINTS CONTEST #6. Theme:  "Empire of the Sun - Japan" - Any subject, scale or kit that represents Japan during the World Wars.  These should be subjects that reflect the Japanese culture and their effort during the period leading up to and including World War II.  The theme is open to anything Nippon to include military, civilian and shogun warriors.

November 4th - POINTS CONTEST # 7. OPEN CONTEST.  Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.

April 3rd - SPECIAL CONTEST - "April Fools" (Non-Points) -  Any subject or scale that depicts a "What If," "Future Fantasy", or "Never Happened" or "Hollyweird" (Comics, Cartoons and TV/Movie).  Examples might be a NASCAR A-10 or a failed Prototype like the Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus or even a figure of a Supermodel eating fried Chicken.

May  1st - POINTS CONTEST #2.  Theme: "May Day" -  Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.  The May Day theme is any subject or scale that represents the conflict between the European Axis powers and co-belligerent Finland against the Soviet Union, Poland and other allies, which encompassed Northern, Southern and Central and Eastern Europe from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945. It has been known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia, while in Germany it was called the Eastern Front.  

 Clinic:  Aircraft Weathering (Paint Chipping) - Jerry Little

 

June 5th - POINTS CONTEST #3.  Theme: "Rotory Wing" -  Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.  The Rotary Wing theme represents any scale or subject that is has a rotor (helicopters, CV-22 gyro-copter).

 Sponsored Contest:  "Lockheed Martin" - Patrick Dick.  Any Lockheed Martin subject or scale.

 

July 10th - SPECIAL CONTEST - 1945 (Non-Points)  Any subject or scale, friend or foe, that was recognized as a part of the year.  WWII was winding down in Europe and warming up in the Pacific during 1945. 

 Sponsored Contest:  "Adversaries" -  Mike Blohm and Matt Blohm.  Any subject or scale that depicts adversaries.  Examples are "Snake and Mongoose" Funny Cars, Me 109 vs. Spitfire Mk Is from Battle of Britain or even Predator vs Alien.

 Clinic:  TBD

 

August 7th - Swap Meet and ASM Distressed Kit Auction - No Contest.  Bring your half-builts and misfits for a fun auction to benefit the club.

   Clinic:  Aircraft Weathering (Paint Chipping) - Jerry Little (Moved from May)

September 4th - POINTS CONTEST #4. Theme: "Trainers" - Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.  The Trainers theme is any model depicting a subject that was used during training.  This could include military or civilian aircraft, the ’64 Buick you learned to drive in, the USCGC Eagle (WIX-327), or any number of armor pieces.

 Sponsored Contest:  "It's all Greek to Me"" - Gil De La Plain.  Any Greek military subject or any Greek mythological subject. It could be a grungy A-7 from the Hellenic Air Force, a spitfire or 109 that served in Greece, a tank (allied or axis) that served in the ground campaign, an ancient trireme, a hoplite warrior, a figure of Medusa, etc.

October 2nd - POINTS CONTEST #5. Theme:  "Nuclear Winters"  Open to any kit, any subject, any scale that represents The Cold War.  Limited to the years 1947-1991, it represents the state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact).  This excludes items specific to other conflicts during that time (Vietnam, Korea, and Afghanistan).  If considered "Dual Use", subject has to show Cold War relevance (B-52 for example).

Sponsored Contests:  "Hawker Aircraft" - John Tate - Best aircraft designed or manufactured by Hawker, from 1920 to 1963. This includes some of the greatest fighter aircraft ever designed, such as the Fury biplane, Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest, Sea Fury and Hunter. Awards by skill level and scale depending on turnout.

Sponsored Contests:  "Nuclear Heritage Model Display" - Hosted by Defense Nuclear Weapons School Museum.  Best model entries built for display at the Nuclear Heritage Model Display at the Defense Nuclear Weapons School Museum.

November 6th - POINTS CONTEST # 6. -  OPEN CONTEST.  Open to any kit, any subject, any scale.

 Sponsored Contest:  "Best Little Fokker" - Don Smith - Any World War I airplane manufactured by Fokker. Any scale, any nationality and any variation/model/subspecies, etc. etc. Show off your Wingnuts and be the "Best Little Fokker."

 

December 4th - ASM 2015  MODEL OF THE YEAR CONTEST.  Competition amongst the Best of Show winners at each skill level from all of the 2015 Theme (Points) and Special Contests.

Sponsored Contest:  "Steampunk" - Jerry Little -  Any subject, any scale  that depicts the Steampunk subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century.  This is a great opportunity to use all the extra parts from kits that are in the “spares” box.

April 4th - "FAMILY TIES" - SPECIAL CONTEST (Non-Points).  Contest open to any subject with a connection to a family member or a family friend.  Examples:  a car owned by a family member, a ship crewed by a family member, a plane flown by a family member, or a figure representing a family member.  Or, a Sci-Fi subject depicting one of your yet-to-be-born descendants! 

Also - Show-and-Tell:  Bring in and discuss a model project, from any angle- research, kit construction or finishing, especially if connected with the contest theme.  Share your experiences and family history.

 

May 2nd - JAPAN.  POINTS CONTEST #2, open to any kit, any era, any scale, depicting a Japanese subject.

 

June 13th - SPECIAL CONTEST – WORLD WAR ONE (Non-Points).  Any model depicting a subject from the Great War 1914-18, airplane, figure, tank, ship or diorama.

 $ Also -  "D-DAY, JUNE 1944" Sponsored Contest- $ hosted by the ASM E-Board - any aircraft, ship, armor, figure or diorama subject, Allied or Axis, for the first month of the Normandy Campaign.

The above themes are also ideas for Mike Blohm and Josh Pal's ASM display at the State Fair in September, so build or bring in any models that you would be willing to lend to that effort, and that would assist them in deciding a theme display entry this year.  Let's do everything we can to support Mike and Josh, who have done an excellent job representing ASM at the State Fair.

  Any seaplane, floatplane or military vehicle amphibian.
$ Also – Gil De La Plain's "ELECTRONIC WARFARE" Sponsored Contest,  $ ROE: "Radar centric", meaning any aircraft whose primary purpose involves radar as it’s sole offensive or defensive weapon or system.  Or any aircraft whose primary purpose is to locate and jam or destroy enemy radar systems.  Examples are E-3 AWACS, E-8 Joint STARS or any other airborne, ground imaging platform (OV-1 Mohawk with a SAR pod for instance), Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (Wild Weasel), or B-17 (if you can prove that individual aircraft carried nothing but a load of chaff)..

Mike & Matt Blohm's "ADVERSARIES" Sponsored Contest.  Two models count as one entry, with the subject being adversaries on land, sea, air or space.  For example, a Spitfire and Bf-109 from the Battle of Britain, the KM Bismarck and the HMS Hood from the Battle of the Denmark Strait, a German Panzer IV and a Soviet T-34 from the Battle of Kursk, The USS Enterprise vs. a Klingon battlecruiser, or from the dragstrip, Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen vs. Don "The Snake" Prudhomme.  Entries must be from the same battle/contest.

# Also: Don Smith's "ASSAM VALLEY" Sponsored Contest.  Best model of a fighter aircraft, any nationality, that served in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater of operations during 1943-1945.  Any scale, however the markings must be accurate for the CBI Theater.  Examples include the SEAC Thunderbolt, P-40N, Ki-43 II Oscar and the Ki-84 Hayate.

December 5th - ASM 2014 MODEL OF THE YEAR CONTEST

(*) "Mustangs and Corsairs" Special (Non-Points) Contest.  Any P-51 Mustang or F4U Corsair model, any scale, in World War II markings, U.S. or Allied.

"ASM 2014 Model of the Year Showdown".  Contenders for the ASM 2014 Model of the Year Award are: Best of Show Winners from four 2014 Theme (Points) Contests and Best Overall Winners from five 2014 Special Contests in each of the four skill levels : Juniors, Basic, Intermediate, and Masters

2013 ASM Contest Schedule

NEW for 2013 A Maximum of  5 entries may be entered on a "Points" night and 5 on a Non-Points night.

NEW for 2013"Double" theme nights.  Two themes will be presented to choose from.  One modeler can win both awards, but they must be separate models/entries.  If subjects for only one theme are present, only one theme, Best of Show award will be given for that level.

             Modelers will compete against their peers from their division, Masters with Masters etc.
             Models will be judged on the basics of model building as well as accuracy of the vehicle.
             A "Slap Daddy" award will be given to the best model in each division and catergory depending on turnout.
             If a low turnout happens, then an award for the best in each division will be given
             No limit on the number of entries!
            All entrants must have fun building!

* Jul 9 2010 - Sponsored Contest - FEM-CON by Josh Pals  A celebration of female figures from all genres (fantasy, pin-up, anime, historical etc.).  Hundreds of excellent female figure models are available on the market, and all scales and mediums are welcome for this contest.  Use your imagination, although figures should be tasteful and non-explicit.  *Sponsored Contest:  Tamiya Spitfire Contest sponsored by Hobby Proz and Brian Peck - Attention Spitwads!  Exclusive contest open to those members who participated in the group purchase of new Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire Mk. IXc kits through Brian Peck at Hobby Proz.  Kit can be built OOB or modified.  Entries will form the basis of a special group entry at the 2010 IPMS Nationals.

 Aug 13 2010 - Nationals Debrief Night - Bring your winning models and trophies, new kits, references, decals, war stories and scuttlebutt to share with other ASM members and celebrate our club's good competitive showing at the 2010 IPMS Nationals.  Cake, caviar and champagne for all present (well, cake anyway).   No model contest scheduled due to the proximity of IPMS National Convention in Phoenix, AZ, which will run from Aug 4 to Aug 7, 2010. 

Sep 10 2010 - Summer Points Contest - Open:  any model, any scale, any era  Clinic:  Aircraft Cockpits by Patrick Dick

 Oct 1 2010 - Special Contest # 4  Blitzkrieg! - any model, any scale, depicting a subject from the early days of WWII, from the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 through the Fall of France in June 1940.  A wide variety of Allied and German aircraft, armor, figures, ships and dioramas can be built to fit this theme.  Themed models entered in previous contests are welcome in this Special Contest, per guidelines in ASM contest rules.  The club is arranging for a special guest speaker to correspond with the contest theme.

 Nov 5 2010 - Fall Points Contest - Open:  any model, any scale, any era (final points contest to determine Modeler of the Year in each skill level).

 Dec 3 2010 - Sponsored ContestMercedes Daimler-Benz by Patrick Dick  Any car, truck, bus or other vehicle produced by this premier German auto company, or any subject powered by a Daimler-Benz engine.  (Contest Director's Note:   I visited the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany and can attest there are an infinite variety of model subjects that can fit this theme.  Good choice, Patrick!)  Plus Model of the Year Contest (Competition among Best of Show winners at each skill level from all of the 2010 Points and Special Contests).

Note: All "Theme" contests are open to ALL entries. However, only models that match the theme are eligible for the "Best of Show" awards in each skill level for that night's contest, and will subsequently become eligible for the "Model of the Year" competition showdown in December.
