National Atomic Museum Display
ASM’s WW II 1/48th Scale Model Display at the National Atomic Museum
Note: ASM’s World War II 1/48 Scale Model Display was discontinued at the National Atomic Museum on January 31, 2009, due to the museum’s move to their new venue and a lack of display space at that site. This page is for historical purposes only.
The National Atomic Museum is the nation’s only congressionally chartered museum of nuclear science and history. The museum was established in 1969 as an intriguing place to learn the story of the Atomic Age, from early research of nuclear development through today’s peaceful uses of nuclear technology.
This ASM display covers the history of World War II, and the events leading to the development and use of the atomic bomb. The display is broken down into the Pacific and China-Burma-India (CBI) theaters of operation in one case, and the European and Mediterranean theater of operation in the other. Major time periods and battles/campaigns are highlighted in a timeline approach, with the models being accompanied by historical information, pictures, patches, etc. The display grew out of a previous ASM project supporting the USAF 50th Anniversary, celebrated in 1997-1998, which had ASM displays at the National Atomic Museum and two locations on Kirtland Air Force Base.
