Contest Summary

This year for the New Mexico State fair we had 55 total entries, which is about average. There were three youth entries. Two senior youth entries. 29 adult entries. And 21 entries in the professional category, which are mostly club members. We also had nine display only models and we also did the what is scale modeling educational display. James Medina had the most entries with seven he also won a clean sweep with seven blue ribbons. The most entries in the adult category was a lady named Haley Gibson with five entries. I want to thank Mike, Matt, Victor, Mark and David for help with the entries and James Medina for help with judging.

Contest Summary

The 2023 State Fair Contest had 49 total models entries. Thanks to all who participated in the contest and in the ASM display, helped with the model entries and pick-up, and did the judging.

The Youth section had 1 entry by 1 entrant. The Best of Show – Youth entry was the F-4 Phantom by Augustine Romero. There were no Senior Youth entries.

The Adult section had 25 models across 13 different sections. The Best of Show – Adult entry was the Luftwaffe Machine Shop Car by Paul Beok. The Professional (ASM members and others) section had 23 models in 14 classes. The Best of Show – Professional entry was the scratch-built HMS Bacchante from Byron Gore. A total of 6 ASM members entered models in the 2023 contest.

Contest Summary

The 2022 State Fair Contest had a great showing with 65 total models entered in the contest by 33 entrants. This is our 5th highest number of entries since I began tracking that in 2005. Thanks to all who participated in the contest and in the ASM display, helped with the model entries and pick-up, and did the judging. A big thank you to Frank Randall, Bob Henderson, Jim Medina, and Matt and Mike Blohm for assisting with the model entry registration and the judging.

The Youth section had 1 entry by 1 entrant. The Best of Show – Youth entry was the Spitfire by Katie Darnell. The Senior Youth section had a large number of entries—8 total models by 5 entrants in 5 different classes—which was great to see. The Best of Show – Senior Youth entry was a very nicely-done Owl Bear by Abram Mahlman. There were some very nicely painted Warhammer figures entered in this section.

The Adult section had 34 models by 23 entrants in 15 different sections that were very competitive. The Dioramas section had 5 nicely-done entries. The Best of Show – Adult entry was the superb IJN Akagi aircraft carrier built by Byron Gore. The Professional (ASM members and others) section had 22 models by 7 entrants. The Best of Show – Professional entry was a great Stryker Engineering Support Vehicle (ESV) built by Victor Maestas. A total of 9 ASM members entered models in the 2022 contest. There were some great models in contention in both of these sections.

We plan to add at least three new classes for the 2023 State Fair contest. These include paper models, wood models built from pre-cut model kits, and 3D metal models from pre-cut kits.

ASM conducted the “Battles of the Pacific – 1942” (80th Anniversary) display which included 31 models. Additional info and pictures are provided below.

ASM’s “Battles in the Pacific – 1942 (80th Anniversary)” Display

ASM’s “Battles of the Pacific – 1942” (80th Anniversary) display filled one case with 30 total models ranging from ships in 1/700 scale and aircraft, armor, and beach assault craft in 1/72 scale to 1/48 scale. Each model had a card describing what it was plus its involvement in 1942. Information provided included a 1942 Timeline Chart, area/theater maps, and charts showing the sequence of the Battles of the Coral Sea (May 1942) and Midway (June 1942). Several postcards of early war “morale posters” were also included. The top shelf included 12 models in 1/72 scale that included most of the American and Japanese aircraft involved in the battles of 1942. We were able to take advantage of Byron Gore’s large IJN Akagi aircraft carrier entry as a center-piece on the bottom shelf of our display. It would certainly attract any fair-goer’s attention! It participated in the Pearl Harbor attack and was subsequently one of the four Japanese carriers lost during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Midway was a crucial strategic defeat for Japan and contributed significantly to the allies’ ultimate victory in the Pacific.

Another eye-catching component of the display was several models related to the “Doolittle Raiders.” These included a 1/700 scale “USS Hornet” (CV-8) aircraft carrier built by Mike Blohm that was completed just in time for the display, and a 1/48 scale B-25B Mitchell medium bomber built by Frank Randall. Information and pictures were supplied about the Raid, the Hornet, and the B-25. The Doolittle Raid on Tokyo and several other sites in Japan took place on April 18, 1942 by 16 B 25s launched from the USS Hornet. The Hornet model depicts Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle’s B 25B becoming airborne and all the other B-25s clustered at the stern end of the carrier deck awaiting their turn for takeoff. The B 25B model depicts the “Ruptured Duck” flown by 1Lt Ted Lawson and Raider Crew #7. Lawson would later write the famous book “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.” Although the raid caused comparatively minor damage, it demonstrated that the Japanese mainland was vulnerable to American air attacks and provided an important boost to American morale. Thanks to the ASM members who provided models for the display: Bob Henderson, Victor Maestas, and Matt and Mike Blohm (and models by two of my brothers).

The Youth section had 1 entry by 1 entrant. The Best of Show – Youth was the Apollo 11 Landing by Cayden Guerra. The Senior Youth section had 1 entry by 1 entrant. The Best of Show – Senior Youth was a very nicely done USS Missouri battleship by Cole Darnell.

The Adult section had 30 models by 16 entrants. The Best of Show – Adult was the IJN Nagato battleship by Byron Gore. The Professional (ASM members) section had 18 models by 7 entrants. The Best of Show – Professional was a Warhorse Y-Wing Diorama by James Medina. There were some great models in contention in both of these sections.

ASM’s “71st Anniversary of the Korean War 1950-1953” display filled one case with 33 total models ranging from 1/144 scale to 1/35 scale. Three of the “Korean War” display models were also contest entries. The display included a high level description of the Korean War and maps showing what had occurred during the invasion, the UN counterattack, the Chinese intervention, and the eventual stalemate. Information cards covered the major battles, including the retreat to the Punsan Perimeter, the Inchon Landing, the Chosin Reservoir, and MiG Alley. Cards were also provided describing each of the models.

ASM’s “Korean War 1950-1953” Display

The display’s theme was “The 71st Anniversary of the Korean War 1950-1953.” This was the same theme that was going to be used in 2020 until the fair was cancelled due to the pandemic.

We filled up a whole case with a total of 33 models covering the major aspects of the conflict. We had a mix of models in multiple scales from all the U.S. services, the United Nations (UN) allies, and North Korea. The display included a high level description of the Korean War and maps showing what had occurred during the invasion, the UN counterattack, the Chinese intervention, and the eventual stalemate. Information cards covered the major battles, including the retreat to the Punsan Perimeter, the Inchon Landing, the Chosin Reservoir, and MiG Alley. Cards were also provided describing each of the models. Pictures of the models are included below. More pictures of individual models will be posted soon.

The air war had the largest amount of models in the display with 21 total, mostly in 1/72 scale. These included US Air Force, US Navy and US Marine Corps (USMC) jets and propeller aircraft, a Sea Fury from the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy (1/48), and six aircraft flown by North Korea. The ground war section had four models. These included three US Army subjects: an M-26 Pershing heavy tank, a M4 Sherman medium tank; and a self-propelled M40 155mm gun of the 937th Field Artillery Battalion. North Korean armor was represented by a T-34/85 tank. These were in 1/35 scale, except for the Sherman, which was 1/48. The Inchon Landing section of the display included seven US Navy and US Army beach assault models–landing craft, amphibious vehicles, and ground vehicles and a soldier all in 1/72 scale. Three of the display models were also State Fair model contest entries. Scale breakdown for the display was 26 in 1/72, 4 in 1/48, 3 in 1/35, and 1 in 1/144 (included in the excellent F-86 Sabre Versus MiG-15 diorama built by Glenn Bingham to create a forced perspective).

A large number of this last group of 23 models had been built to support ASM’s Korean War display during the “USAF 50th Anniversary” celebration at Kirtland AFB in 1997. 2022 will be the USAF’s 75th Anniversary.

Ben Fithian and 1Lt Samuel Lyons who downed an La-9; and the F-82G “Twin Mustang” flown by 1Lt Skeeter Hudson and 1Lt Carl Fraser who scored the first aerial victory in the Korean War defending Seoul. Lastly is the F-86E Sabre flown by ace Capt Harold Fischer.

9. F-84E “Thunderjet” flown by 1Lt Jacob Kratt the top-scoring F-84 pilot with three victories (two over MiG-15s); a B-26 “Invader;” an LT-6G “Mosquito” forward air controller aircraft; and an F-51D “Mustang” flown by 1Lt James Glessner, who scored a Yak-9 victory.
